INDIA/ORISSA - Supreme Court clears mining projects
In a recent move, the Supreme Court cleared the mining projects of Vedanta and Poscoe in the hills of Orissa. These hills are considered to be the "most bio diversity hot spots of the Eastern Ghats" by environment protection Group and the villagers consider these as sacred. The villagers consider any amount of compensation "worthless" and are moving to use their legal protection provided by the "Forest Rights Acts". Their efforts got a boost from the recent visit of a Congress Leader..

CANADA - Lakes for tailing ponds
The reclassification of the Second Portage Lake for the Doris North Project and the Baker Lake for the Meadowbank Project as tailing ponds in the Canada Gazette brings to focus the need for awareness of the local residents who feel the need to be educated by expert, professional and unbiased information. There is a provision that a "habitat compensation plan" provided by the mining companies is in place.

PERU - Instability of tailing dump threatens city's water supply
he chosen location at Coricancha metal mine is subsequently found to be unstable and the management of the mine is already seized of the issue and necessity to relocate the crushing and milling operations as well as the old toxic waste dumps. The fear of contamination by arsenic, lead and cadmium from the toxic waste to the city water supply has already set the alarm bells and a state of emergency is already in place. The range of environmental concerns regarding the mining operations needs to be considered to the logical conduit.
The instability is attributed to the seismic activity and subterranean water filtration in the area and the management has initiated already a geotechnical audit.

MINE SAFETY and REGIONAL DISASTERS

The increasing frequency of Natural disasters as well as the unprecedented intensities appear to call for a fresh look at the co-existence of community and old as well as new mine sites with the toxic waste from abandoned mines, tailings and mining waste generation and storage.
Cyclone "NARGIS" hit Myanmar earlier and while the impact is yet to be fully grasped, the "Picher tornado" brings home an added dimension from toxic wastes.
This Tar Creek Superfund Site under the process of clean up and relocation faced the reality with telling effect under severe weather. Responsible mining can no longer be local but has become regional or even global.

THERE IS MERCURY TOO!

Coal is considered universally the cheapest fuel but the negative aspects are surfacing progressively all the time with no immediate alternatives. There appears to be an urgent need to map the global impact of the coal fired plants. While coal gets all the publicity, mercury a by-product of coal burning does not get the attention it deserves particularly in the cement manufacture which is pushing up with growing economies.
